Analog Obsession
The new update of Distox has been released this month among several other new updates by Analog Obsession. Analog Obsession has fulfilled its announcement made at the end of July, announcing three new updates for this month of August, such as:
- The first was the HLQSE equalizer (Helios type 69 console equalizer emulation).
- The second was the SSQ equalizer (traditional console equalizer emulation).
- The Distox version includes improvements to the circuit design and DSP, as well as 4x oversampling (activated by clicking on the Analog Obsession logo), a value reading feature for the knobs, and, of course, support for the Catalina and Big Sur (Intel / M1) operating systems.

Distox
This time around, Analog Obsession’s Distox multimode distortion effect plugin would not be mimicking iconic, classic, legendary, or rare hardware (as usual).
But what Analog Obsession does tell us is that this distortion effect incorporates two different circuits: ‘Tube’ and ‘Op-Amp’ (thus the name multi-mode), where it also integrates different Tube (Valves) and Op-Amp circuits (Operational Amplifier).
You will have ‘Input & Output’ volume control (+/- 30 dB for each knob) and ‘HP & LP’ filter settings, where HPF ranges from 20 Hz to 2 kHz and LPF ranges from 20 kHz to 10 kHz’ in Distox’s adjustment capabilities.
You also have a ‘MIX’ knob for the Dry/Wet mix, an ‘On/Off’ button (bypass), and, most crucially, the ‘MODE’ knobs, which allow you to select the distortion circuit you want to apply to your signal. There are seven models to pick from three OpAmps and four Tubes.

Final Thoughts
Finally, “Distox by Analog Obsession” is a fantastic free utility that is well worth your time. It is not only free, but it also provides unique and useful ways for distorting any signal.
You can obtain a reasonable result with the “Distox” that is comparable to some of the most costly plugins now available. If you know how to utilize this plugin to its maximum capacity, the difference between those plugins and this one is negligible.
Instead of depending on expensive and well-marketed tools, learning how to utilize your own can save you a lot of money in the long run.
Distox can be used on a single instrument or a vocal to give a slight smile and presence. Alternatively, you may use one as a parallel AUX send for the full mix or master to add complexity and cover the frequency spectrum.
